How to choose your next tattoo style

Choosing a style is about more than learning its name. It means understanding the images you want to carry with you and how you want your idea to look. These questions can help you prepare for a conversation with the studio.

Start with what catches your eye

Save a small selection of tattoos you like and look for what they share. Do you prefer strong contrast or a simple composition? Is the focus a word, a symbol or an image? Note what you do not want too. This gives the artist more to work with than asking for “something nice” while leaving room for an individual design.

Blackwork: black ink and contrast

Black ink is the starting point for TECNIKA’s blackwork pieces. When gathering references, notice how much space is filled with black and which areas remain open. Describe whether you prefer a bold presence or a more restrained composition. The artist can discuss how those preferences fit your subject and size.

Mini tattoos: size is a design choice

“Mini” describes a small format, not a specific technique or aesthetic. Decide which element is essential and which details you could simplify. Bring an approximate measurement and ask what size the artist suggests. Not every reference remains equally clear when made smaller.

Lettering: the words and their shape

Prepare the exact text, including accents, punctuation and capital letters. Add lettering references and explain whether you prefer something understated, ornamental or expressive. Check spelling separately from typography: attractive lettering still needs to say exactly what you intend.

Color: a palette for your idea

Share a palette or images that communicate the mood you want. Distinguish essential colors from those that are simply inspiration. If there are other tattoos nearby, discuss how the new piece will relate to them so the composition can be considered as a whole.

Next, explore the work and start a conversation

Look at the studio’s work and explain what interests you, without assuming every reference will work at any size or placement. Iván Barredo and Nury Tattoo work at TECNIKA; the studio can receive your idea and help you discuss the project. Our quote guide can help you prepare your message.
